Which Org mode and Emacs version are you using?
M-x emacs-version RET
M-x org-version RET

It works here with
Org-mode version 7.4 (release_7.4.135.g84087)
GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.20.0)
of 2010-12-11 on raven, modified by Debian
Without any configuration of Org mode (i.e. emacs -Q & just load Org mode).
[[http://example.tld][Text text]]
Is display as "Text text" (without quotes, ofc) and C-c o opens the
link in my browser.
