See faces:

  mode-line           
  mode-line-active    
  mode-line-buffer-id 
  mode-line-emphasis  
  mode-line-highlight 
  mode-line-inactive

They have foreground, background, weight, and other attributes.

You can experiment by setting the attributes to 'unspecified
or 'default.
