tramp hang

tramp hang

[braydon fuller]

after sending password emacs hangs, when trying to use tramp on one of
my servers (this one is a XEN VPS, from GPLHost).

Anyone know the problem?

I'm getting the following in my *tramp...* debug buffer

# Opening connection for root@117.121.243.13 using ssh...
# Waiting for prompts from remote shell
# Waiting 60s for prompt from remote shell
# Sending password


I'm getting the following in my *tramp/ssh root@117.121.243.13* buffer

Last login: Sun Jan  6 08:25:54 2008 from
24-205-80-87.dhcp.psdn.ca.charter.com

Are you sure you are allowed to log as root with ssh on your server?
(/etc/sshd_config ==> PermitRootLogin no/yes)
Normally no.

I get:
tramp: Looking for regexp "" from remote shell

after adding to my .emacs:
(setq tramp-verbose 10)

And, yep I can ssh in normally, just not through emacs.
/etc/sshd_config = no file or directory

Your prompt is not Tramp friendly; it seems to contain escape
sequences. Read the Tramp manual, sections "Remote shell setup" and
"Frequently Asked Questions".

I finally got tramp working by using the following in my .emacs:
(setq shell-prompt-pattern "\b")

(if the above character between " " doesn't show up, it looked like "^H"
in my .emacs)

I copied the character it was repeating at the end of my prompt found by
looking in the buffer:
*tramp ssh:root@.......*

i got this buffer by enabling the following in my .emacs:
(setq tramp-debug-buffer t)

To login I used the command:
C-x M-f
Find file: /root@sample.com:/

with the following in my .emacs:
(setq tramp-default-method "ssh")

This worked for a GPLHost XEN VPS running Debian lenny/sid
I am using Emacs22 that has TRAMP packaged.

I also used in my .emacs so tramp would previously be loaded, however
it's not required, emacs will load it on the fly:
(require 'tramp)
