Would highly recommend you have a look at the docs for gnupg - there is a 'quick start' doc which will explain a lot. Essentially, you use a gpg key to encrypt the data. Associated with a gpg key is a passphrase/password. You have to enter the passphrase/password before you can use the key. If you want to change the passphrase associated with a key, you need to use the gpg utility. If you want to create a new key, you also need to use the gpg utility.
