This is not an answer to your question, but rather an alternative way to
use non-ASCII chars in a tex file:

\usepackage[german]{babel}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

(Replace "german" with the language of your choice)

Now you can simply type the actual character rather than using an escape
sequence.
