I see now that this change:

* emacs-lisp/find-func.el (find-library-name):
Use `load-file-rep-suffixes' instead of '("").
added ".gz" to the suffixes.
So "foo.el.gz" will be found even when looking for "foo.el".
In other words, my change can be reverted, so I've now done that.
