This works when evaluated in the scratch buffer: (if (equal major-mode 'lisp-interaction-mode) (message "yup") (message "nope")) And you could wrap it in a: (with-current-buffer STRING-OR-FUNCTION-THAT-RETURNS-A-BUFFER-OR-BUFFER-NAME) form if you like?
