To close this open thread, what I have done to get it work is:

(set-frame-font "Inconsolata-12")
(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(font . "Inconsolata-12"))

I guess a variation like

(add-to-list 'default-frame-alist '(font . "Inconsolata-12"))
(setq initial-frame-alist default-frame-alist)

might work also.
