I've been setting the following variables about forever:
export XMODIFIERS=@im=none
export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
export QT_IM_MODULE=xim
I'm using Debian GNU/Linux 7.4 and i3 window manager, so the problem you
are seeing probably doesn't appear here. However, I do believe that
those variables solve your problem too.
