I think he thinks in terms of consistency. But consistency depends on
the view point, so his consistency is of no value for people with a
different view point. Too bad we only know about three opinions.

I see our different views as of the same right and value. And the use
case (who uses marking commands with an active region at all?) is a
corner case. I don't mind about the default as long as there is a new
option. I would rather want to discuss what else should be done
(behavior of other marking commands etc, should we change
`dired-mark-if', etc.
