Yes, both: a program that provides a service. I'm not sure how to
differentiate between these two classifications...

Their web page, http://davmail.sourceforge.net/licenses.html, indicates
GPLv2.

Linux, Windows, Mac OS.

I do not believe so; at least, I did not have to install anything that I
would consider non-free.

I followed the instructions on the web page and everything worked as
expected. However, should anything go wrong, the system does look
somewhat forbidding. But, for me, nothing went wrong so it was
straightforward.
