I think this may be a bug in Gnus, introduced with the recent
`message-cite-reply-position' variable.  The default is 'traditional but
you can try 'above and 'below as well.  Can you submit a Gnus bug report
(`M-x gnus-bug') for the traditional behavior, if that's what you have?
