You need to start Emacs with 'emacs -nw' (for --no-window-system). They changed the default behaviour a couple of versions back, so now you get them same from typing 'emacs' in a terminal, as clicking an Emacs icon in your GNOME, KDE, or whatever desktop suite: and what you get is a *new* windows with the Emacs with the WM menus, the buttons, etc. (Actually, I have already said that, or a variety thereof, several times in this thread.) > Not sure where that leaves things but now going to insert: > XTerm*metaSendsEscape:true > > Into my ~/.Xresources file.... but Doggone it, I don't remember > how to reread .Xresources so that any changes become > effective.... I'll have to restart X and see how it goes. It might not help restarting X. You need 'xrdb ~/.Xresources'. To automatize things, you can put that in .xinitrc - this I've *also* mentioned, *and* it is in the link I posted. Are you paying attention? That said, I didn't get it to work in xterm in Solaris. In Linux, the above formula did it. -- Emanuel Berg - programmer (hire me! CV below) computer projects: http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573 internet activity: http://home.student.uu.se/embe8573
