I looked into this and I think one possible answer is "mini-gmp". This is a single C file that is part of GMP. It provides the same "mpz" interface that these patches are currently using, though at a performance cost. So, one idea would be to put mini-gmp.c into the Emacs source tree, but only compile it if the real GMP library is not found. Tom
