but I am able to mount the url directly using gvfs-mount. the username is contact@sivalik.com

i.e. use "@" instead of "%" in the user name.

Btw, in Emacs 27.0.50 you could use the native "owncloud" method, which
shall support nextcloud servers as well. If you have added a respective
GNOME account, the remote filename should be
"/contact@sivalik.com@www.sivalik.com:/QuickNote.md".

using @ instead of % did not work.

neither did the tramp string without the method after using gvfs-mount external to emacs.

to workaround, I just open the gvfs fuse directory (/run/user/../gvfs/../) in emacs.

I want to stay on stable emacs so will not be trying owncloud method yet, but look forward to using it with the next release.

returns "/davs:rajeev@sivalik.com@www.sivalik.com:", which looks OK to me.

How do you mount this directory with "gvfs-mount" (or "gio mount", the
modern variant of this command)?

and I get prompted for a userid and password.  The gio mount works without any issues.

Well, I've checked the code. Tramp does not expect a directory path as
mount path after the trailing colon of the remote file name. So it
always tries to mount "davs://www.sivalik.com/", and not
"davs://www.sivalik.com/nextcloud/remote.php/webdav".

Therefore, in a file name like
"/davs:www.sivalik.com:/nextcloud/remote.php/webdav/tmp" it cannot
detect, that everything before the "/tmp" subdirectory belongs to the
mount path. Maybe we could find a way to instruct Tramp for this case,
but this would require a syntax extension of remote file names.

So I'm sorry, but I must point you to the new owncloud method of
Tramp. If you don't want to switch to Emacs 27.0.50, you might install
the recently released Tramp 2.4.0 in parallel to Emacs 26.1. This shall
be good enough for the owncloud method.

I will extend the Tramp manual, mentioning this restriction.

I have added the following to the dav/davs entry in the Tramp manual:

     Paths being part of the WebDAV volume to be mounted by GVFS, as
     it is common for OwnCloud or NextCloud file names, are not
     supported by these methods.

Some months ago I've tried this. But there were some non-trivial
problems, so this work is stalled.

However, it is easy to download the recent Tramp from
<https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tramp/tramp-2.4.0.tar.gz>. The INSTALL file
will tell you how to install it.
