Maybe such 'ls' implementations could be detected using something like
'grep-probe'?

Dired defaults to ls-lisp.el on ms-dos and windows-nt, and
'ls-lisp-dirs-first' default to t when 'ls-lisp-emulation' is 'MS-Windows'.
