Hello,
Are there anyone who is using the pager.el which is so great a fix to emacs
page up/down?

But one defect is that:
if you scrolled down to the last page of the text and expected the
cursor to go to the end of the file, pager just don't respond as there
is not enough lines to scroll down one whole page?
Any idea to modify the pager.el to make it work as normal emacs behavior?
Thanks.

;;; The Emacs builtins for scrolling are worthless! The commands in pager.el
;;; works the way the builtins should have done from the beginning. For

There is the variable scroll-preserve-screen-position in Emacs 21.

And there is scroll-in-place.el by Eric Eide.

It seems that these do similar jobs as pager.el; perhaps you would
like to have a look?

Thank you very much, Kai Grossjohann.

>There is the variable scroll-preserve-screen-position in Emacs 21.
The scroll-preserve-screen-position only effects on the
scroll-up/scroll-down but
not the page-up/page-down which use the forward-line.

>And there is scroll-in-place.el by Eric Eide.
This one looks complicated and seems to be outdated. It might exactly
do the same thing as the scroll-preserve-screen-position. what do you think
about it?

The pager.el looks simple but seems to require good skill on lisp programming
to modify it.

What are page-up/page-down? I have keys labeled like this on the
keyboard, and Page Down does like C-v whereas Page Up does like M-v.
All four keys preserve the screen position.

It does not do the same thing as scroll-preserve-screen-position. It
is very old, but that does not mean it is bad.

Yes, it is complicated, because it does a lot of stuff. Luckily, I
think you can get it to do simple things fairly easily.
