Did you plan on including support for showing non-ASCII fonts? That is, fonts whose sole purpose is to display non-ASCII characters of some script(s)? Because if you did (and I think it's important to Emacs users), then it would require different techniques, probably working with fontsets instead of set-face-attribute, because the latter only allows you to set the font for ASCII characters.
