I've tested your previous changes for a long time,
and everything works nicely. I hope your new patch is even
better. However, since it grew to an unmanageable size,
I will test it only after you will push it.

Maybe this hook is needed for bug#71386, but I have no plans
to use it for tab handling.

This option looks useful for some cases.
