Hi,
Using Gnus to view my mail, I am trying to avoid seeing the unnecessary
headers each time. I have the following line in my .gnus:
(setq gnus-visible-headers "^From:\\|^Subject:\\|^Cc:\\|^To:")
But doesn't seem to help - I still see everything.
Any ideas where I am going wrong?
Thanks...

Use gnus-ignored-headers to hide headers.

Try using a list of headers rather than a regexp that matches all.
In my .gnus file I have:
;; The headers that are shown for messages or news-articles.
(setq gnus-visible-headers '("^From:" "^Date:" "^Subject:" "^To:" "^Cc:"
"^Followup-To:" "^Reply-To:" "^Newsgroups:"))
;; The order of headers shown in article buffers.
(setq gnus-sorted-header-list '("^Date:" "^From:" "^Reply-To:"
"^Followup-To:" "^Subject:"
"^To:" "^Cc:" "^Newsgroups:"))
and it works like a charm.

Why not just this?
(setq gnus-sorted-header-list '("^Date:" "^From:" "^Reply-To:"
"^Followup-To:" "^Subject:"
"^To:" "^Cc:" "^Newsgroups:"))
(setq gnus-visible-headers gnus-sorted-header-list)

No effect on my mail :-(.

BTW: If I select from the menu-bar, "treatment hide headers" - that gets
the effect I am looking for....

The following is what I'm setting up in my ~/.emacs file.
;;mail
(setq message-required-mail-headers
'(From Date Subject X-Mailer User-Agent Message-ID Organization))
;;news
(setq message-required-news-headers
'(From Date Newsgroups Subject X-Newsreader User-Agent Message-ID Xref Organization))
(setq gnus-visible-headers
(list
"To:"
"Cc:"
"Reply-To:"
"From:"
"Subject:"
"Newsgroups:"
"Followup-To:"
"Date:"
"Organization:"
"Organisation:"
"X-Mailer:"
"X-Newsreader:"
"User-Agent:"
))
(setq gnus-ignored-headers "^References:\\|^Xref:")

Ignore all by default and use gnus-visible-headers like you do ?

What happens when you type `t' while viewing a message?

Hm. Please view a message and then switch to the *Article* buffer
and then repeat C-h v gnus-visible-headers RET -- perhaps the
value of this variable got b0rked somewhere along the way.
What happens when you type C-u g while viewing a message? That
surely should produce *some* kind of change, especially if the
message in question is a mimey multipart thingy.
