It can be like this with Gnus, and I've had the exact same experience, but it's because I have certain ideas and because I was used from the Emacs world to be able to get everything the way I wanted, so that's what I expected and did with Gnus as well. However, I don't think it has to be that way, if someone is happy with the way it works and looks day one, and I don't see why that cannot be the case, then it is a matter of putting a bunch of data in .gnus, do M-x gnus RET, and instigate your very first flame war. -- underground experts united http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573
