The problem has been resolved by starting another session of emacs. Could
there be a conflict between running a shell session and using ange ftp?
Thanks,

Normally, shells and ange-ftp should not conflict. But it is
difficult to say what might have happened.

I'm afraid the only way we'll ever find out is if it happens again.
Then you can observe under what circumstances it happens, and that
will give us a handle to debug this.
