Because that group is mirrored on Google Groups! Which also has a very-rudimentary-but-still interface for replying to and posting posts. Optimally, gmane.emacs.help would be the group on display there, but perhaps that won't happen for manpower, technical and/or legal reasons. So to have the gateway operational would be the best, I guess. The material on GG is probably favored to some degree by Google's search algorithms, and we will sure look bad if people come to what is the present state of gnu.emacs.help and think that is representative of our small but thriving community. BTW this post has arrived on gnu.emacs.help: Poster: Nuno Silva Did something happen to the mailing list gateway?
