With this recipe, I can reliably reproduce this on 64bit mingw64 on
Windows (built with -O2). Running this produces the message:

    Re-entering top level after C stack overflow

... which confirms Eli's hunch about the cause. Running the same recipe
under gdb, I get the following backtrace:
