Dear List,
I'm trying to use apt-utils (from emacs-goodies.el) to handle my packages.
Going through the documentation, I tried:
M-x apt-utils-show-package <enter>
Emacs takes some time to do its job, and then gives me the error "Wrong type
argument: symbolp, (quote t)"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Sebastian

My apologies, apt-utils belongs to Debian.el, not emacs-goodies.el as I
mentioned below.

Can you do M-x toggle-debug-on-error RET and send the backtrace for
the error? Also, what version of the debian-el package do you have
installed?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
Please find below the output of the debugger (sorry for the non-ASCII

Do you get the error with "emacs -q" and "emacs -q --no-site-file"?
What version of Emacs are you using?
Also, does the output of "apt-cache pkgnames" and "apt-cache pkgnames
-o APT::Cache::AllNames=0" look OK in a shell?
Thanks,
Matt

I get the same error with 'emacs -q', while with 'emacs -q --not-site-file'
the command is not recognized at all. I'm running Emacs 21.3.1.

Both seem OK, except for several lines of "...couldn't stat source package
list..." at the end which I always get anyway, no matter what front-end to
apt I use.
Cheers
Sebastian

With --no-site-file, you will have to load apt-utils.el by hand.

These are not benign in this context, and need to be discarded. Can
you test a fix for the version of apt-utils.el in testing which I've
posted at:
<URL:http://www.tc.bham.ac.uk/~matt/emacs/apt-utils.el>
Thanks,
Matt

I still got the same error though : (

Success! I loaded that version and it works OK (I only typed
'apt-utils-show-package' 'emacs', and got sensible output), both with a
simple 'emacs', or with the two options you suggested previously.
I'm very hesitant to modify my sources.list, so as to eliminate the
"...couldn't stat source package list..." messages. I still need to learn
much about apt to feel comfortable doing that. Any suggestions as to how to
deal with this?
Thank you very much for such a great tool.

You could try, from the shell, "apt-get update". If that tells you
that it couldn't contact certain servers, then I suggest to comment
out the lines from sources.list.
After all, how should apt download packages from an unreachable
server?

Thanks for testing. I'll try to get these fixes into Debian ASAP.
