Emacs pretest 23.1.97 is now available for download via FTP, at the
following location:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.97.tar.gz
The xdelta against the Emacs 23.1.96 pretest is here:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.96-23.1.97.xdelta
Barring any unforseen circumstances, this will be the final pretest
before the Emacs 23.2 release. I encourage everyone to give this
pretest as much testing as possible. If you find any regressions,
kindly report them immediately.
Pretesters: please send me an email reporting success or failure on your
build platform. Report bugs via M-x report-emacs-bugs, or email
emacs-pretest-bug@gnu.org. For questions, email emacs-devel@gnu.org.
Developers: since we are so close to the release, please refrain from
making all but the most obviously-correct changes to the branch, without
first discussing with Stefan or myself (or on emacs-devel).
Thanks.

Builds, bootstraps and runs OK on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, using
MinGW (gcc 4.5.0).

Some Japanese characters don't render correctly. One such example
character is the middle letter in the word game "ゲーム". Another one
I found is the dot character here between 1 and 2 "1・2".
It is tested on GNU Emacs 23.1.97.1 (i386-mingw-nt6.1.7600) running on
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600). This problem is not
new and has been observed for some time.
I first reported this problem for pretest 23.1.94.
C-u C-x = on the above two characters says:

What about C-u C-x = on some Japanese characters that do display?
The above tells me that whatever font is being selected for Japanese
characters is missing those two characters. Seems unlikely, and it
almost certainly isn't the case for all Japanese fonts installed on
the Japanese version of Windows 7.

Could it be that you have no fonts for these characters?

The curly brackets in lib-src/makefile.w32-in are still there! The
pretest (and the last five pretests) will not compile using the
Microsoft compiler. This bug has been reported numerous times.
PLEASE, either fix this or drop support for Visual Studio 2003.

Yes. The patch was committed to the trunk and has not been backported
to the emacs-23 branch.

I agree we should fix it, but this is a bit too dramatic. Anyone
trying to build with Visual Studio will likely notice the problem and
just hand-fix the makefile...

Hello,
I think the problem is that the default font for Japanese chosen by
Emacs is not Japanese font.
Because even if I type `C-u C-x =' on "ゲ" on my Windows 7 box with
emacs -Q, Emacs says,
| character: ゲ (12466, #o30262, #x30b2)
|preferred charset: japanese-jisx0208
| (JISX0208.1983/1990 Japanese Kanji: ISO-IR-87)
| code point: 0x2532
| syntax: w which means: word
| category:
| .:Base, K:2-byte Katakana, c:Chinese, h:Korean, j:Japanese, |:line breakable
| buffer code: #xE3 #x82 #xB2
| file code: #x83 #x51 (encoded by coding system japanese-shift-jis-dos)
| display: by this font (glyph code)
| uniscribe:-outline-BatangChe-normal-normal-normal-mono-13-*-*-*-c-*-jisx0208*-* (#x1040)
|
|Character code properties: customize what to show
| name: KATAKANA LETTER GE
| general-category: Lo (Letter, Other)
| decomposition: (12465 12441) ('ケ' '゙')
BatangChe is the font designed for Korean.
"MS Gothic" is the suitable default font for Japanese Windows, IMO.

Not likely on a copy of Windows 7 purchased in Japan. These are very
common characters in Japanese writing.
It seems that Emacs has chosen a font with only partial coverage for
displaying Japanese text, but I don't understand why this would be the
case.

I think the problem is that the default font for Japanese chosen by
Emacs is not Japanese font.
Because even if I type `C-u C-x =' on "ゲ" on my Windows 7 box with
emacs -Q, Emacs says,
| character: ゲ (12466, #o30262, #x30b2)
|preferred charset: japanese-jisx0208
| (JISX0208.1983/1990 Japanese Kanji: ISO-IR-87)
| code point: 0x2532
| syntax: w which means: word
| category:
| .:Base, K:2-byte Katakana, c:Chinese, h:Korean, j:Japanese, |:line breakable
| buffer code: #xE3 #x82 #xB2
| file code: #x83 #x51 (encoded by coding system japanese-shift-jis-dos)
| display: by this font (glyph code)
| uniscribe:-outline-BatangChe-normal-normal-normal-mono-13-*-*-*-c-*-jisx0208*-* (#x1040)
|
|Character code properties: customize what to show
| name: KATAKANA LETTER GE
| general-category: Lo (Letter, Other)
| decomposition: (12465 12441) ('ケ' '゙')
BatangChe is the font designed for Korean.
"MS Gothic" is the suitable default font for Japanese Windows, IMO.

Isn't BatangChe a Korean font? Why do your Japanese fonts get overlooked?
What do the following say (copy to the *scratch* buffer and press Ctrl-J
after each line):
(list-fonts (font-spec :registry "JISX0208*"))
(list-fonts (font-spec :registry "GB2312.1980-0"))
(list-fonts (font-spec :registry "KSC5601.1987*"))
(list-fonts (font-spec :registry "iso10646-1" :script 'kana))

Here is the result. If you need full length lists without truncation
let me know how to avoid the truncation in the *scratch* buffer.

Built successfully on Debian sid i386 (that's no surprise), but
- many .elc files were remade (could be a problem for people trying to
cross-compile Emacs)
- one spurious backup file left after "make distclean"
- one file shipped in the tarball deleted by "make distclean"
Detailed list of changed files (emacs-23.1.97 is freshly unpacked,
emacs-23.1.97-build has gone through "configure && make all distclean"):
