Also, Richard cited BzrQuickStartForEmacsDevs, which says:
Now we get the source files plus all the history of the branch we work
on (trunk on this case, which is the CVS mainline):
cd emacs/
bzr checkout URL_TO_UPSTREAM_TRUNK trunk
^^^^^^^^^^^^
AFAIK, "bzr checkout" creates a checkout, not a bound branch.
