I use mairix for this. It creates an Rmail folder out of messages that match specified search criteria. You can find mairix here: http://www.rpcurnow.force9.co.uk/mairix/ Its Emacs frond end is in lisp/net/mairix.el. Emacs comes with its manual, see mairix-el.info.
