It's because of this snippet from font-lock.el: (defconst lisp-font-lock-keywords-2 (append lisp-font-lock-keywords-1 (eval-when-compile ... ;; Erroneous structures. ("(\\(abort\\|assert\\|warn\\|check-type\\|cerror\\|error\\|signal\\)\\_>" 1 font-lock-warning-face) Not sure what this is supposed to catch.
