Actually, I hate bootstrapping as well, and I seldom if ever need to. Even if a simple "make" fails, trying "make" a few more times, or maybe "make -k" in some extreme situations usually does the job. And when worse comes to worst, I just do find ./lisp -name '*.elc' -delete make
