With trunk saving a file on Windows XP currently runs into the following
crash (I have backup-by-copying set to t).

Should be fixed now (trunk revision 115810), please try again.

(The problem was that Emacs was using non-portable mode_t values, but
no one ever cared until Paul added an assertion.)
