Could you please explain how to use these?  Or should Emacs pick thise
up automatically?  In that case, the MS-Windows executables still use
nt/icons/emacs.ico, which I imagine needs to be changed, right?

You have nothing to go, they will be used instead of the old ones.

Oh, right, thanks for pointing that out.  I'm not a Windows user, so I
easily forget about it.  I will fix that.

I see that you fixed that, thanks.  Any idea why the new emacs.ico is
more than 6 times bigger than the previous one?

The old one was quite small, for the new one I used a bigger
resolution.  Have you tried it on Windows?
