There's a companion node "Replacement and Lax Matches", which
describes this variable.

That's a mistake that should be fixed, thanks.

Not sure whether this is intended, please submit a bug report.

No, I don't think so. case-fold-search is not only for searching
commands, so it follows a different logic.
