Emacs pretest 24.2.90 is now available for download via FTP, at the
following location:

  ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-24.2.90.tar.gz

This is the first pretest for what will become Emacs 24.3, containing
both new features and bugfixes. See etc/NEWS for a list of changes
since Emacs 24.2.

Please send me an email reporting success or failure on your build
platform. Please report any bugs that you come across via
M-x report-emacs-bugs, or email bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org.
For questions, email emacs-devel@gnu.org.

Thank you for helping to test Emacs.

It wouldn't build on Windows because the file nt/emacs-x86.manifest is
missing from the tarball. I fixed that in the emacs-24 branch.
People who build on Windows should copy the file from their bzr
sandbox.

I compiled Emacs successfully on the two systems described below. Yet I
was wondering: what information is generally useful here to characterize
"one's build platform"? I copied some information from buffers created
via `report-emacs-bug' - obviously a clumsy procedure. Could it
facilitate this process if there was a command `report-emacs-build' that
gathers the relevant information in a mail buffer, similar to
`report-emacs-bug'?
Possibly, a command `report-emacs-build-success' was really sufficient,
because build failures most often might deserve a bug report.

You can insert the Emacs version at point with C-u M-x emacs-version RET

I too have sometimes used `report-emacs-bug', just to get the complete version
info. Perhaps `C-u C-u' with `emacs-version' could provide that info?

I'm talking about the difference between these two (the first is from
`report-emacs-bug', and provides more info about the build):

1.

My question is first: what information is possibly relevant or
helpful here?

I thought that the main purpose of emacs-version was to distinguish
the different (historical) versions of emacs. During the pretest of
a particular emacs version, this might not provide too much variety.

I guess under GNU linux the most basic information about the build
platform is provided by "lsb_release -d". report-emacs-bug includes
the output of this command.

But again: I don't know what is possibly most useful during a pretest.

You want system-configuration and system-configuration-options (they
are variables). That is where report-emacs-bug gets the above.
