With "M-|", of course.

I don't understand why you needed to trim some spaces, I don't see any
extra spaces in the mail Stefan sent.  Maybe your MUA needs to be
upgraded or changed?

Anyway, 'patch' has a switch to ignore whitespace, which helps in some
situations.
