For remote (i.e. networked) volumes, there's nothing that can be done
to speed that up.  Network volumes are slow, period.  Your native 'ls'
simply shortcuts and thuis fails to retrieve some attributes Emacs
doesn't, that's all.  TANSTAAFL.
