This is unfair at best: Thierry did NOT make these changes as part of "moving to use the minibuffer for reading almost everything". He made the changes as part of adding a new feature to the registers support, and for reasons that are technical, not ideological or anything else. I'm not yet sure the feature he added can be implemented without this change; this is currently being discussed. It is okay to say that you are unhappy about this aspect of the change, but please give Thierry the credit for doing this for valid technical reasons.
