From: Stefan Monnier via Bug reports for GNU Emacs, the Swiss army knife of text editors @ 2021-12-09 4:20 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: 52385
Package: Emacs
Version: 29.0.50
Try this:
% emacs -Q some/multi-page.pdf
C-x 2
n n
You'll see that the `n` changes the page in both windows.
This was not the case in Emacs<29 where this could be used to view
different pages of the same PDF in the exact same way we can view
different "pages" of a text buffer when displayed in several windows.

I'm unable to reproduce this on the trunk. I loaded a three page pdf,
`C-x 2', and `n n' took me to page three in the upper window only.

Hmm... I just bootstrapped from the latest on `master` and it still
happens for me.

I tried with a different PDF file, and ... Wow, that's weird. If I
follow the recipe, hitting `n' increases to P2/6 in the window, and the
other window still says P1/6. But nothing changes in any window -- both
are still displaying the first page. However, if I choose the other
window and hit `n', then both windows say "P2/6" in the mode line, and
both advance to the second page.
That's... er... special...

It seems window-configuration-change-hook is not called
after splitting the window with C-x 2, and thus
image-mode-reapply-winprops is not called from this hook.

Actually, window-configuration-change-hook is called correctly.
But the regression is in overlay window priorities:
when two overlays with 'window' properties are added
over the same region, then in 27.2 the overlay where
the overlay window matches the selected window is preferred
over the overlay with another window. But in 28.0.90
the first overlay always wins.
Here is the shortest test case:
(let ((o1 (make-overlay (point-min) (point-max) nil t))
(o2 (make-overlay (point-min) (point-max) nil t)))
(overlay-put o1 'window (selected-window))
(overlay-put o1 'display '(image :type xpm :file "left-arrow.xpm"))
(select-window (split-window))
(overlay-put o2 'window (selected-window))
(overlay-put o2 'display '(image :type xpm :file "right-arrow.xpm")))
In 27.2 it displays different images in different windows. But
in 28.0.90 only one images is displayed in both windows.

If you don't assign priorities to overlays, you cannot expect any
particular order of their preferences. It depends on random factors
you cannot control. The window property only filters candidate
overlays, it doesn't affect their priorities for affecting the
display.

Sorry for misleading info: actually, it's not about overlay priorities.
When an overlay has the ‘window’ property, then this overlay should apply
only on that window, but currently it's applied to all windows.
So still there is a bug that causes regression.

Please show a recipe for reproducing this from "emacs -Q".

Please see the recipe for "emacs -Q" in https://debbugs.gnu.org/52385#20
It works correctly in 28.0.90, but fails in master.

In that message, you said the problem happens in Emacs 28.0.90 as
well, which I couldn't reproduce. Does that happen for you only on
master, or also on the release branch?

Thanks for the recipe.
> In 27.2 it displays different images in different windows. But

In fact, the problem existed only in Emacs 29, on the master branch.
Emacs 28 behaves correctly.
Lars, this happened due to one of the changes you made as part of
installing the support for the 'min-width' space display spec: a small
code fragment was moved inside handle_display_prop, in a way that
disabled the selection of overlays specific to windows, when those
overlays have the 'display' property.
I moved that code fragment back to where it belongs, and tested that
min-width still seems to work, both on the mode line and in the
xdisp-tests.el. If you know about any other situation where that move
of the code was necessary, please show the recipe or tell the details.
Otherwise, this bug should be fixed now on the master branch.

Sorry, my previous observation was incorrect.
I confirm this is fixed on master now,
and no problem was on the release branch.

With that change, eval-ing the following will infloop (so don't eval it
in the Emacs you're using):
(insert "|" (propertize "foo" 'display '(min-width (10))) "|")
