In a new debian testing installation of emacs 24.5.1
trying to customize from the menu and save the changes
i noticed that ~/.emacs is used and 'user-init-file' is nil.
But if i 'touch'init.el then opening emacs
user-init-file -> ~/alex/.emacs.d/init.ec !
And that file will be used to save customizations.
But init.el shouldnt be the one? I found no so ever documentation of
init.ec

I think this is a known bug that was fixed in later versions, so I
suggest to upgrade your Emacs.
