Replacing certain characters with images is easy, and can be done in Emacs already; you just need to code that explicitly in Lisp. But having this done automatically by the display engine whenever it sees a certain codepoint is something else entirely. IOW, the ability to display today images instead of some text is not something that can evolve into automatic support for these characters on the display engine level.
