Based on the GNU Ethical Repository Criteria Evaluations [0],
savannah.gnu.org for official GNU projects, and savannah.nongnu.org
otherwise.

Other alternatives:

- GitLab
- NotABug (and Gitea ?)
- sr.ht: https://meta.sr.ht

I know people have been scarred by the protracted fight of the Windows
world against the Free world, but really Microsoft is probably no worse
than the majority of other companies nowadays.

My understanding from https://savannah.nongnu.org/register/ is that
Savannah welcomes actual projects and not so much personal
code / snippets / docs / configuration such as dotfiles.

In this case, what would be the next best thing to host repositories
such as dotfiles?  NotABug seems to be very much in line with the GNU
ideology.

Right.  Indeed, aside from Savannah and for those purposes, among
hosted services NotABug seems to be the one most in line with the
free software movement and ideology that I'm aware of.

sr.ht is another free software solution, with some of its components
under the AGPLv3 and some under the MIT license.  Though currently
public registration is closed for the hosted version on sr.ht, you
can reach out to its maintainer and ask for an account if you like to
help with development or testing.

Of course, if you're able to, another option would be self-hosting
one of these pieces of software on your own server.

That's because the general standard of ethics has been getting ever
lower in the computing field.

I find it hard to remember exactly how ethical standards were in order
to judge if they have truly gotten worse, but they sure aren't flying
very high these days.

My point was only in response to the general reaction I perceive (along
the lines of "OMG Github has become evil"): I find it not obvious that
Microsoft's ownership will make Github noticeably worse.

I do wonder how this will impact Gitlab, tho: it seems like a fair
number of Github users feel compelled to move to Gitlab, which is good
publicity for Gitlab, but it will also increase their operating costs
(since I expect most of those users stick to the zero-cost hosting
service).

BTW, I'd encourage anyone interested in this to try and help package
those software for Debian to make it easier for people to self-host.

Is there some relationship between Apple and GitLab?  If so, what is
it?  When I see the details I could try to evaluate its moral
implications.

I believe Apple’s Xcode Integrated Development Environment 
is to use GitLab seamlessly. Have a look at Connor A. McGregor’s
day in court and the Information Technology around him for ideas.

I don't see how this implies that Apple is somehow involved in the
development of GitLab or in providing the services offered on gitlab.com

If the relationship is purely instrumental and Apple has the 
patrons demonstrated to the music industry they are willing 
to pay subscription fee there is an upside for GitLab’s deal.

Xcode is extremely hostile to users' freedom, but is there a reason to
blame this on GitLab?  There might be one, but I haven't seen that
presented.
