Shouldn't all PDF files in the repository be marked as binary? I
think otherwise checking them out on non-Posix platforms will run the
risk of ruining them.

Yes. The problem already happens with doc/lispintro/cons-*.pdf

Most definitely. I cannot open any one of them with Adobe Reader 8.1
unless I check them out with -kb.
