hello,

I go to http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/ to download 23.4 for os x lion but the only install documentation I can see is for windows. Are there docs for os x install somewhere? I am a total unix/emacs/programing newbee.

They are not necessary. Mac OS X is some UNIX variant. It's a name like Solaris, Free BSD, Linux, etc.

I can recommend http://aquamacs.org for Mac OS X, you could even try one of the nightly builds (this is the Emacs 24.x branch in the development section of the site) - they work very well for us.
