Hello -

I know how to set/change the color used to highlight the selected
region, or a secondary selection.

When in a buffer the user clicks on Edit -> Select All (or types C-x
h), the whole buffer is selected --- but not highlighted. How can I
highlight the whole buffer in this situation?

(Note: I am trying to make my wife switch from Windows/Word to
Linux/Emacs. For unknown reasons she WANTS to have the buffer
highlighted after a SelectAll. As long as my personal taste is
involved, I do not care that much :-)

Turn on `transient-mark-mode'. It's also available from the Options
menu.

try Options -> Active Region Highlighting (Transient Mark Mode)
or M-x toggle-transient-mark-mode
