I'm running emacs 22.2.1 (GNU Emacs 22.2.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600)) on
a Windows XP. When I try to run gdb in emacs (plain M-x gdb or by M-x
gdb --annotate=3 executable.exe) I get an empty buffer and a message
"Symbol's function definition is void: nil". If I use Cygwin and an X-
terminal I can run gdb normally (version GNU gdb 6.8.0.20080328-cvs
(cygwin-special)). Any ideas what might be the problem?

Try using the native Windows port of GDB (can be downloaded from the
MinGW site). The Cygwin port might be incompatible with native
Windows pipes, which Emacs uses to communicate with GDB.
