I tested in emacs -Q just now and have to say that it seems to work well. I have previously had some problems with it like the region suddenly being highlighted when I did not expect it to or commands not working when the region was not highlighted. All of that seems to be solved. For a new user I would guess having the region highlighted when not expected is the most confusing and annoying thing, it kind of feels like some sticky thing follows the cursor. If we have eliminated all those "false positives" (I don't remember now when I got that behavior) I think this will be a good default. More experienced users can easily change the appropriate setting to get the behavior they like. I like it. /Mathias
