Emacs displays NO-BREAK SPACE differently from regular space, whereas Org-mode displays \nbsp{} as a regular space (when replacement of symbols is enabled). Maybe it would help to display it as NO-BREAK SPACE instead?
I can provide a patch if it is useful.
