Basically it is looking for BABYL format headers which have been
removed.

ALSO

in previous versions of rmail mode the labels were displayed in the
line at the bottom of the window after the mode name, and current
message and number of messages. There is no such label display now.

I just started to use the new rmail (i.e. pmail). When I
first do M-x rmail, the babyl format of RMAIL is converted
to mbox format automatically. But, it seems that labels are
lost. At least, they are not shown in RMAIL nor
RMAIL-summary buffers.

This appears to be a problem with your own code, not with rmail.
Obviously, you will have to update your code for the new rmail mbox code.

There is no such function in rmail any more.

There is no such function in rmail any more.

You have advised this function.

Thank you -- I found I had copied rmailsum.el when my mail file went
over 10000 messages and the summary could not cope.
However it still does not do what the previous summary did -- it
does not display labels in {} as previously. I also note that rmail
mode no longer displays labels on the bottom line.
I cannot see how to continue; not every machine I use has the
rmail-mbox format and this makes moving form home to work will be next
to impossible, and without working labels I cannot handle mail

Version of 2009-01-27 with -q reading mail

This is the same file, loaded and h typed. You will see labels in teh
first and not in the second

Yes, I'm afraid the label handling is rather broken at present, as
reported in bug#2069.

You may wish to use an older version until trunk rmail settles down.

The simple fact that the buffer is automatically converted
is worrisome. I think we should prompt the user before doing it.

        Stefan

PS: What's the plan for people who use both Emacs-22 and Emacs-23 to
access their rmail mail?

I checked in a fix for this.

However it still does not do what the previous summary did -- it
does not display labels in {} as previously. I also note that rmail
mode no longer displays labels on the bottom line.

When I type `a foobar RET', `foobar' appears in the mode line.
It works also if I move away to another message and move back,
and if I save the file and visit it again.

But the display of labels in the relevant line in the summary buffer,
{ likethis }, seems broken.

ALSO

in previous versions of rmail mode the labels were displayed in the
line at the bottom of the window after the mode name, and current
message and number of messages. There is no such label display now.

unrmail needs to be fixed to transfer the labels.
When I wrote it, there was no way to record labels in an mbox file
so discarding them was inevitable.

The simple fact that the buffer is automatically converted
is worrisome. I think we should prompt the user before doing it.

Maybe, but given that both the old and new versions of Rmail can
convert the format automatically, I am not convinced the prompting
is necessary.

PS: What's the plan for people who use both Emacs-22 and Emacs-23 to
    access their rmail mail?

Each version can convert the file, so it does work.

Making it prompt each time will make that somewhat more annoying.

I found that the labels are not lost but preserved as these
headers:

X-BABYL-V6-ATTRIBUTES:
X-BABYL-V6-KEYWORDS:

and newly added ones are recorded as these headers:

X-RMAIL-ATTRIBUTES:
X-RMAIL-KEYWORDS:

Just recently, Chong fixed it:

	* mail/unrmail.el (unrmail): Record labels in X-RMAIL-* fields,
which are recognized by the new Rmail, instead of X-BABYL-V6-*.

So, it seems that the already converted RMAIL file can be
fixed just by replacing X-BABYL-V6 to X-RMAIL.

But the problem of keywords not shown in RMAIL-summary is
not yet fixed.
