None of these commands do anything for me. AFAIK I am using X with a
composite extension:

xdpyinfo
number of extensions: 32
    BIG-REQUESTS
    Composite
    ...

What am I doing wrong?

This is a build --with-x-toolkit=athena, if that matters.
