The C and C++ compilers come with Xcode. The build process starts with running autogen. Configure then finds:

	configure:5054: /usr/bin/clang --version >&5
	Apple LLVM version 9.1.0 (clang-902.0.39.1)
	Target: x86_64-apple-darwin17.5.0
	Thread model: posix
	InstalledDir: /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Toolchains/XcodeDefault.xctoolchain/usr/bin

And this compiler comes from Apple's Xcode package.
